Why is the Ostankino TV Tower called that?

Why is the Ostankino TV Tower called that?

The name of the landmark corresponds to the name of the Moscow district that was chosen as the most suitable for construction.
It is interesting that the place for its construction was carefully selected and tested; from a variety of proposals from architects and designers, they chose the design of a reinforced concrete structure with a metal spire, presented by Nikolai Nikitin and his colleagues.

What is it made of and how was it built?

Various works were submitted for the design competition, among which were metal versions similar to the Eiffel and Shukhov Towers. However, the idea to use reinforced concrete structures to build the tallest architectural structure in Europe won. This made it possible to make the TV tower not only tall, but also multifunctional and beautiful. It was the authors of the last project who determined how many meters high the Ostankino Tower would rise above Moscow.

The problem that worries both construction specialists and tourists is the stability of the Ostankino TV tower. Its weight, including the weight of the foundation, is 55 thousand tons, the height is more than half a kilometer. To ensure stability and reliability, a foundation was laid about 4.6 m deep with a support area of more than 2000 m². The entire grandiose structure rises on 10 supports 62 meters high with a base diameter of 60 meters.

 What's inside

The design of the TV tower, built during the era of space exploration, is in many ways reminiscent of a rocket ready for launch, thanks to its arched supports, porthole windows, and glass rooms at its base.

At a height of 300 meters there is a restaurant, an observation deck, service rooms with television and radio broadcasting and meteorological equipment. Inside the shaft there is electrical equipment and a service fire escape.

Fire in Ostankino TV Tower: Causes and Consequences

A tragic event in the history of Moscow was a major fire at the Ostankino TV tower that occurred in 2000. On August 27, a cable located at a height of 400 meters caught fire. The cause of the fire in the Ostankino tower is said to be the wear and tear of electrical equipment. Following the cable, the polyethylene insulation materials ignited, and the fire began to spread rapidly in the interior of the tower structure. The expert commission answered why the Ostankino tower burned: a short circuit was the cause.

Although firefighters arrived within 11 minutes of the fire, it was very difficult to stop the fire inside the structure. The Ostankino Tower was extinguished for more than 24 hours, with fire helicopters and ground equipment working simultaneously, as well as firefighters and rescuers evacuating people using elevators. The fire destroyed everything in its path over an area of 3 floors, including the famous restaurant "Sedmoe Nebo". The elevator shafts were also destroyed, and the communication systems, power supply, and steel support cables were also damaged.

Among the victims of the Ostankino Tower fire, three people are named: a firefighter, an elevator operator, and an equipment repairman.

After the fire, reconstruction took 7 years, but television and radio broadcasting was restored within a few days. Since 2009, excursions have resumed, since 2011, guests have been welcomed by the observation deck again, and the restaurant after the tragic events opened only in 2016.
